Karen New Year 2019

We were honored to spend another Karen New Year with Mimi and her family. My friend Lauren and I woke up our girls bright and early so that we could be at Mimi’s house at 6 am in the morning to be part of the opening of the festivities. We made it right in time. There were opening speeches and traditional songs and then the raising of the Karen flag, which kicked off the day!

Between the festivities we took some breaks at Mimi’s house so the kids could play and relax. Jayden has really grown up these past couple of years, he’s such a cutie and loves playing with the big kids!

Back down in the celebration it was so fun to walk around and see all the people in their traditional Karen dress having fun and enjoying the day.

A traditional game and national sport of Myanmar is chinlone. It’s like volleyball but you can only use your feet to keep the ball off the ground and get it over the net. It’s intense and really impressive to watch.

We had so much fun celebrating our second Karen New Year with Mimi and her family. I’m so glad we were able to bring even more friends to enjoy it this year.
